South Africa's leading
Solar Water Heating
Supplier
Heat pump heating systems can keep swimming pools
warm, heat your home’s water and heat your home’s interior space. Their popularity
is increasing for several reasons. Heat pump heating systems are cost saving,
reliable, adaptable, and pollution-reducing because they indirectly use renewable
energy from the sun. Heat pumps can produce hot water day and night, winter
and summer at very high efficiencies. Modern systems are small and attractive
and blends in with the look of the modern house. Did you know that heat pump
heating systems work well even in sub zero temperatures?
A heat pump heating system is a rewarding investment. It can cover up to 75%
of your monthly heating bill and increase your property value. When you purchase
a heat pump heating system you are making a conscious, responsible decision
to help reduce harmful emissions from fossil fuels, while maintaining your
quality of life.
How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump works like an air conditioning unit in reverse – please see the
diagram below. It extracts heat from the ambient air surrounding it, enabling
it to heat the refrigerant which is then compressed causing it to get even
hotter. This is then run through a heat exchanger where this energy is drawn
off to heat the water and then the refrigerant is allowed to expand again,
thus cooling it down and enabling it again to absorb heat from the surrounding
air. So electricity is only used to run a fan and compressor and the heat
energy is provided indirectly by the sun. Typically a heat pump can produce
4 times as much heat energy as the electrical energy it consumes. So by connecting
a heat pump to your existing hot water cylinder you can divide your hot water
electrical consumption by 4 (for pool and Jacuzzi systems this figure typically
goes up to 5).
How much money will a
domestic heat pump system cost, and how much will it save?
A typical residential retrofit system (heat pump connected to the existing
geyser) costs between R12k installed. This system will save the client about
R15300 in the next 3 year and so it is easy to see the brilliant return on
investment that a heat pump heating system can provide – please note this
is an conservative estimate based on measurements done on middleclass housing
with 4 occupants. Should the demand be higher, then, the saving will be even
better!
How much will your heat pump system help the
environment?
On average for every 1kWh of energy produced by a coal power station, 0.966kg
of carbon dioxide is produced. Now the heat pump water heater that we used
in the cost saving calculation will provide you with a yearly average of over
4000 kWh. Therefore, you will personally be responsible for saving our environment
of another 3878kg of carbon dioxide per year. Carbon dioxide traps heat in
our atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect, which alters our planet’s
climate and ecological systems. Using solar energy in place of nonrenewable
fuels may also reduce nitrous oxides and sulfur dioxides, which are components
of smog.
What maintenance does heat pump heating systems
require?
Heat pump heating system are designed to be maintenance free so the only real
maintenance is just ensuring that the heat pump evaporator is clean from leaves
and other object that can block airflow. ITS however recommends an annual
checkup of the system to ensure that your system is providing you with the
biggest possible saving. During this checkup the evaporator can then also
be cleaned.
